Sedation Dentistry

Am I A Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?

If you are one of the many Americans that have an intense fear of the dentist, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. Millions of people across the country place their oral health in jeopardy because their anxiety over dental work prevents them from receiving necessary treatment. Sedation dentistry provides you with a way to conquer your fear so that you can maintain healthy teeth and gums.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry helps many people reduce the anxiety experienced when visiting the dentist. By administering a sedative before your treatment, your sedation dentist will help you relax throughout your procedure.

There are three common types of sedation methods:

• Conscious oral sedation • Nitrous oxide sedation • Intravenous sedation

The majority of sedation dentists prefer to use conscious oral sedation, which involves taking a pill before your treatment. You will be awake during your procedure and can communicate with your sedation dentist. However, you generally do not remember very much during the procedure, and what may be hours in the dentist's chair will seem like only minutes.

Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

If you experience anxiety when you go to the dentist, you are most likely a candidate for sedation dentistry. It is important to discuss your medical history with your sedation dentist first to make sure you are a good fit. Typically, your dentist will recommend sedation dentistry for you as long as you are in good overall health.

By choosing sedation dentistry, many patients are able to overcome their fear of the dentist, allowing them to undergo future procedures with reduced levels of sedation. Sometimes, patients will not even require sedation on future visits to their dentist.

Can I Afford Sedation Dentistry?

While most insurance providers do not cover sedation dentistry, it is still worth placing a phone call to find out for certain. If your insurance will not pay for your procedure, you may still be able to afford this important treatment. Most sedation dentists offer financing options in order to ensure that cost considerations do not prevent their patients from receiving necessary treatment.
